Fantastic book with never-before-revealed information. Packed with photos and inside information available nowhere else, the incomparable Marc Cushman has done it again! This is a must-have for "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" fans and all Irwin Allen fans. You'll learn things you never knew and get the truth on the inner workings of the TV industry as you read how Irwin Allen battled and cajoled to get the first hourly science fiction TV show with a recurring cast of characters to the small screen. "Voyage" paved the way for 1960's sci-fi classics "Lost in Space," "Star Trek," "The Invaders," "The Time Tunnel." "Land of the Giants" and so many more.

I saw the film Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea in the movies with my father when I was 11. I loved it from the moment I saw it. To me, it was what Star Wars became to the kids of the 1970s and '80s. I even had my father drag me from department store to bookstore looking for the novelization that I wasn't even sure existed. (I eventually found it in a small bookstore on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, I still have it.)I was excited by the television version of Voyage and watched it when it premiered 3 years later. I currently own all four years on dvd.I have read many books on Voyage and this is, by far, the best. It begins with basically a biography of its producer/creator Irwin Allen. We learn how he got into show business and all of the films he produced before the Voyage tv show including "The Lost World" and, of course, the Voyage film.But when it gets to the tv show that the book really takes it. It covers Voyage's first and some say best tv season. (I actually prefer season 2.)First we get a short biography of the great stars of Voyage, Richard Basehart and David Hedison, as well as the supporting cast. The book then goes episode by episode. It starts with a short synopsis of the episode with various quotes. There are short biographies of the directors and guest stars, dates of filming and on what set and other pertinent information. Each episode description ends with quotes from various columnists and critics, some positive, some negative and my favorite thing, the actual tv ratings of each episode of Voyage and the competition on NBC and CBS. At the end of the books there is a segment on Voyage's producers and composers. This is the first of a three volume set, I am greatly looking forward to Season 2, my all-around favorite season of Voyage, a nice combination of Sci. fi and James Bond type intrigue. (Sadly, like most of Irwin Allen series, Voyage turned into a monster of the week series for most of seasons 3 and 4. But, at least we got 2 solid seasons of Voyage before it got silly, unlike Allen's Lost in Space which got silly after the fifth. or sixth episode or Allen's The Time Tunnel which started to get silly near the end of its first and only season. It wasn't only Voyage that devolved into silliness after its early fairly serious seasons. The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Voyage's competition on Monday nights that first season started getting silly with season 2 and especially went downhill its disastrous season 3. Irwin Allen had nothing to do with that one.)I absolutely loved this book. It is relatively long and I flew through it. As previously stated, there are two more volumes to come covering Voyage's next three seasons, I cannot wait for them to come out.As stated, I am a Voyage fan from the beginning and I enjoyed every page of this book, I heartily recommend it.

I'm in my fifties, and this is THE book I've been waiting for since I was a teenager! I've read Cushman's Star Trek books (I teach an Ethics of Star Trek class) and this book continues the same high standard of research and writing. Some of my own work on naval forces was inspired by Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and I think this book and the books that will follow in this series will set the standard for decades to come. By the way, I've corresponded with former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret.) about my work, and he said he liked Voyage when he was a kid! The difference between Admiral Stavridis and myself, other than the fact he was a REAL admiral, is that I still love Voyage even though I am now as old as Admiral Nelson was. Highly recommended for science fiction fans. The highest recommendation I can give this book is to say I received it today and after starting to read it late this evening I could not stop reading until at 2am in the morning and 220 pages in I had to stop to get some sleep. The information in this book covering so many facets of the show,the creator, the actors and so much back story is captivating to say the least. At over 600 pages this book is a wealth of information. When I finish reading it my anticipation waiting for the next volume which will cover the three remaining years of the series will be difficult to control.

There isn't much you could want to know about the first season of Voyage that isn't in here. Each episode is covered in great detail including internal memos from production, Neilsen ratings for each episode along with those of the other shows in the same time slot, lots of comments from the actors and production crew, reviews for each episode from various periodicals from the time period and lots of great photos both from the episodes and behind the scenes. The description of the book says it contains many never before published photos and that is absolutely true. Each episode gets the full treatment in every way. Marc Cushman and Mark Alfred have done a fantastic job! I am really looking forward to volume 2 as season three is my favorite.

When I got this book, I couldn't believe the detail and research Marc accomplished. Also packed with rare never before seen images from this Irwin Allen classic!! Highly recommend for all sci-fi fans. Yes, even Trekkies should check this out. I can hardly wait for the next volume.

A fantastic read. Certainly it was worth the time to devour this fascinating look at asset accumulation in the developing world. De Soto asks why these assets are not being translated into capital, and how we can change that.Although many portions of the book are bogged down in the admittedly necessary technicalities, he ties in meaningful conclusions and practical applications, making this book excellent for even those without a background in development economics.I greatly enjoyed the way he addressed Smith, Marx, and modern capitalist thought. With each, he neither overstated their importance to our current economic situation nor underplayed their failings as philosophies of capital and trade.

De Soto is lauded as a genius in the field. Frankly I found his "brilliant insights" rather obvious, once extracted from his turbid writing style. Maybe an ESL problem? Reminds me of my long-ago Econ 101 text, the ubiquitous Samuelson. Another man who was brilliant at making the obvious incomprehensible. Is it an occupational disease with economists?

In many poor economies capital exists as dead capital, locked up in extralegal arrangements and as such is unable to be leveraged. DeSoto describes the problem in clear terms with field research and suggests clear steps toward implementing capitalism as a tool that can be used in poverty alleviation and transformation. His last chapter foreshadows the activity from 2009-2015, as the gulf foreclosure rate increased and the gap separating the wealthy and poor expanded.

A thorough explanation of complexity and necessity of third and second world governments to establish foundations needed to support prosperity through capitalism. Anyone who is either interested in economics or international welfare and aid policy must read this book. It should be a requirement for all college Human Rights, Economics, Political Science and International Affairs students -- important information, based upon reality and actual experience.

This book is absolutely essential to anyone who wants to speak intelligently about capital. So many people lack that skill but continue talking. This book actually gives you some knowledge so you won’t sound like a horse’s behind.

A very interesting observation at how western law has defined what capital is, and how the west is able to use it. Allows a better understanding of what capitalism is and how it is used. I've given at least four copies to friends and family.

Nice global view of development and progress. Anti-corruption, need for rules of law that facilitate capital exchange and ownership and interest in capital production. The book is much more than the criticism gives it credit for, most of the criticism focuses on other instances of corruption and failure of land reform; but the book is more than just land reform and is clear that it does not support corrupt land usurping under the name of land reform. Rules of law. Facilitation of ownership and participation in recognized legitimate economy. Removal of bureaucracy that inhibits small business and the poor for exercising legal ownership... Good review of US history of expansion and the wild west of US land reform/ownership/squatting/homesteading.

This is a truly outstanding book. Very rarely does one encounter a socio-economic book that has outstanding narration, solid historical perspectives, and clear, relevant data. Mr. de Soto's thesis is beautifully simple, "Extra legal activities, those activities that exist outside of (not necessarily against, such as illegal) the law, are a fundamental aspect of society. Those societies that have flourished (Europe, the US and developed Asia) are those that have broadened their legal sectors to incorporate and legalize those extra-legal activities." The author then goes on to demonstrate his point by focusing on property laws throughout the third world, documenting in fascinating detail the steps required to own a house in Egypt or the Philippines.Despite these difficulties, ownership still occurs. It does so, however, through extra-legal activities. Local cooperatives that enforce and provide dispute resolution are key aspects of this society. Mr. de Soto argues that these local cooperatives and organizations must be made part of the law; otherwise these countries will eternally lag the developed West. To stop here would have been quite a book, and one which would illicit much debate, but here the author shows himself to be a researcher of particular talent, by providing us with several extremely relevant historical examples. These examples, from the early US, show how extra-legal organizations, such as early mining organizations and land cooperatives in the frontier, came together to dictate how deeds were to be approved, provide safety to those who had settled and resolve disputes. The many acts of the US government that would dictate how these items were to be "officially" handled were more often than not several years lagging in their development, and were merely the `officialization' of pre-existing extra-legal institutions.The author takes us through his argument using wonderful prose, a clear argument and poignant tables. Even those who might disagree with his point would appreciate this book. He does a magnificent job of referencing relevant modern economic works, particularly those of Ronald Coase. This book not only educates the reader about the argument the author puts forward, but also provides the reader with the education necessary to critically evaluate the method and supporting data of that argument. Such books as this are rare, and this is why I highly recommend this book.Points of Interest:Metcalfe's Law (also commonly known as the network effect) described in detail according to its official definition. "The value of a network - defined as its utility to a population - is roughly proportional to the number of users squared. An example is the telephone network. One telephone is useless: whom do you call? Two telephones are better, but not much. It is only when most of the population has a telephone that the power of the network reaches its full potential to change society." (Page 72)The book contains the story of a slump in the Peruvian economy, with one of the indicators being a decrease in construction. Further inspection revealed that sales of bags of cement were actually increasing. The extra-legal economy was booming, but uncounted. (Page 76)"Mandatory law is not enough. As Andrzeg Rapaczynski has pointed out:... `This is the old Hobbesian problem: when most people obey the law, the government can enforce it effectively and [relatively] cheaply against the few individuals who break it. But when obedience breaks down on a large enough scale, no authority is strong enough to police everyone....'" (Page 170)"In the absence of legal protection from the state in most developing nations, it is extralegal law that regulates the assets of most citizens." (Page 175)"One large [extra-legal] squatter settlement I visited recently was initiated by the city council itself to provide homes for some 7,000 families of government employees." (Page 177)"Using economic data from fifty-two countries from 1960 to 1980, Samar K. Datta and Jefferey B. Nugent have shown that for every percentage point increase in the number of lawyers in the labor force (from say 0.5 to 1.5%), economic growth is reduced by 4.76 to 3.68 percent - thus showing that economic growth is inversely related to the prudence of lawyers." (Page 198)

Great book for me as I am interested in cosmetic chemistry, formulations, etc. It will teach you a lot! And Leslie Baumann is a great dermatologist. I would love to work with her on some cosmeceuticals.

The information in the book is rather undetailed. It does, however, cover most of the standard ingredients and gives much interesting stuff to read. In my point of view books in this price category should be a bit thicker than 400 pages; other scientific books I use for my studies are three to five times as thick. Nevertheless I like the book and it does indeed give useful information about cosmetics in general.

This book is very useful, and information is up to date. Some cosmeceutical books doesn't include now frequently used ingredients and explanation. The information provided in this book is quite well-rounded. The best introductory book I have so far.

A thoroughly written book ,whoever is interested in cosmeceuticals must use this book as a reference always is very helpful in my esthetic practice.

I will say this - we don't find out what V.F.D. actually stands for, which is disappointing.The Baudelaires are on a boat with Count Olaf when a storm strands them on an island with very, very strong connections to V.F.D. and the past. The leader Ishmael (whose name bothered me) has a strong influence over the islanders and I didn't trust him from the start. Everything from around the world washes up on the island.Everything.The ending was strange and sad. It wasn't anticlimactic, but it wasn't satisfying. There is an epilogue (chapter 14) that wraps things up a little more but even so....I want to know the answers the siblings read about! I did enjoy finding out who Beatrice actually was.Who Lemony Snicket really is.that was quite interesting.

This story I really didn't expect to end so abruptly. Maybe it was Lemony leading me to think otherwise despite his constantly telling us that we should stop reading of we expected a happy book. But it wasn't a bad ending, just not what I figured and ended too quickly that I felt like many of the mysteries weren't revealed, or maybe I missed them.

The Series of Unfortunate Events books started off quite unique and fascinating. However, as the series went on, I noticed at least a couple of repetitive elements that became cause for frustration. This book was not without its share of those frustrating elements.The first of these was the constant warnings to "put this horrible book down". To be honest, after twelve other books--and was it just me, or did the frequency of the warnings increase--I had no desire to hear this warning rephrased. Whereas, it was humorous the first five or ten times, by book "The End", it was simply something that caused frustration.Also, I found the lists of examples the author gave to illustrate his point got longer and longer, and also more numerous, as the series neared completion. It was almost as if the author had to include a certain number of words, due to contractual obligation. In "The End", there is more than one list covering an item for each letter of the alphabet, if I recall correctly. I began to skim through certain sections of these books. (And, lo and behold, in one section of "The End", the author attempts to catch readers who are doing just that.)Also, whereas other books in the series, when they did portray events that might be disturbing to younger readers, portrayed them in such a ridiculous way as to be obviously comical to any child who was of an age to read them himself, this last book contains a death that occurs as a result of an all too real possibility--childbirth.There is also the ending of the book itself, which, to its credit, is much unexpected, but may leave the younger readers quite disturbed. (As it was, my fifteen year old daughter couldn't stop talking about how upset she was with the ending.)This series is excellent for teaching vocabulary, and this book was no exception, but the other lessons this book tries to teach may not be what children are looking for when they reach for the escape usually found in a good book."The End", and the entire series, after reading the last page, leaves you feeling unsatisfied--incomplete! "That's it?!" is what I kept thinking to myself. The lessons, the author's points, are accurate and well made, but I really, really, really, really (a little Snicket there) don't read fantasy to have such "truths" imparted to me--and I don't think my children do either.Both I and my fifteen year old daughter wish we could have the hours we spent reading this series back, due to the way it all wrapped up in this book, "The End".

I loved the last line of this book. It fit perfectly with the whole series and summed up the whole series. I would have liked to have seen more of some characters, but I liked where this last installment of the series took the Baudelaires. I loved how you finally figure out where the name of the series came from and who it involves. I've never seen an author make up a sort of pen name and then integrate that into the books. I think this series was well written even though some of the plots were a little over redundant. All and all I'm glad I stuck with the series till the end of "The End" even when I wanted to put the books down (as Lemony Snicket has said) before the end of "The End."thank you for your time,Loran

PLOT: In this book, the Baudelaire orphans are shipwreched with Count Olaf onto an "abandoned" island far away from civilaztion and meet a stranger with a certain book who turns out to be more important that you would think. Without spoiling anything, all that I'll say is that the harpoon gun and the Medusoid Mycelium return, and that there's a Chapter 14 (epilogue). Plus, a friend from one of the earlier books is back - but you'll NEVER guess who!! Lastly, let me tell you that at a certain part of the story, there's a Biblical reference that is very interesting to see how Daniel Handler/Lemony Snicket portrays in literature. I think that's it's safe to say that The End was very expecteded by all Snicket fans, but that there was a bit of disappointment when people actually read the book. Well, as far as I know, it's all based on opinion becasue even though some people hated the book, others (including myself) enjoyed it even more than the other twelve! True, the sugar bowl mystery was not resolved, but clues in other books hint to its contents. The VFD mystery is in fact solved, but the reader must pay close attention to what Lemony Snicket says. When you get to the end of the book, the identity of Beatrice is the best you'll love to read because it was so unpredictable (although The Beatrice Letters (A Series of Unfortunate Events) gives you clues). Overall, if you've read all of the books in the series - do not even think twice about reading this one...just do! The cover says it all: this is a very "unfortunate" book. IT IS ABSOLUTELY GREAT (specially Count Olaf's hilarious and unique disguise)! One more thing: Kit Snicket gives birth (I am not sure whether this is a spoiler or not becasue it was kind of obvious that it would happen in the last book, but it was still worth mentioning). The World Is Quiet Here.

An excellent book for kids, and teenagers. I would even recommend this to adults if they want something fun and whimsical. Although something to keep in mind this is the last book in a very long series, so read the first 12 books first.

About the Author

Najwa Zebian is a Lebanese-Canadian author, speaker, and educator. Her passion for language was evident from a young age, as she delved into Arabic poetry and novels. I really liked this book. I read one page every morning to start the day with positive thoughts. I am amazed by how the author has managed to put into words something that my soul was feeling but I hadn't managed to let it out.

This book is very very well and uniquely written. I really enjoyed reading this book and the author did a great job. Tons of wisdom enclosed...

I simply fell in love with this book, after being introduced to this author on Instagram. The words that this author brings to paper, are the ones that normal people (like me and you) are unable to put into words even though we may be feeling and thinking about them. Reading this book made me feel like I had come home; that I had been given the privilege to meet with a like-minded mind, who really GETS you.This book is brilliant.If you are hesitating, just buy it.

I am re-reading it this weekend and taking my time to fully enjoy all of it this time around, relearning my love of reading and this book is Inspiring me to be even more open hearted and free to share myself.

Najwa just has a way with her words that articulates my inner feelings. The positivity and her outlook on many situations found in this book is enlightening and peaceful. It gives me a perspective of self confidence, self respect and that taking the higher road by doing the right thing can only do you good. I can't wait to see what else she has in store for her readers. Great read.

Can't put it down! I learned about Najwa on Instagram and have fallen in love with her work. This was my first "mirco-poetry"/ words of wisdom type purchase. I have finished about half the book and will go back through to make notes and reminders in my copy. I've been able to reflect, accept and move on from many things in the short time of reading it. Thank you Najwa for the inspiration!

I dont write reviews, this is my first review. Did this book meet my expectations? No. It exceed them. This book and Najwa has touched my heart and soul. The most beautiful words put together, to create this amazing poetry. She is a great poet, one of the greatest in my eyes. Don't have second thoughts on buying it. It will help you to achieve positive living lifestyle and if you already practice one, it will enhance your beautiful soul. I can't wait for her next book.

Like a fine wine, Mind Platter shouldn’t be hurried. It should be savored, page by page. An intriguing mix of poetry, philosophy, and affirmation, Zebian is clearly well beyond her years. I flagged too many pages to count, but “The Power of Words,” “Educate Me” and “Choose” were star standouts.
