Charles Stanley is my preacher even though I live in a different state. He is solid and steadfast. He hasn't changed with the times or gotten into politics. He speaks, I listen. When I purchased this book I had no idea who Lilly Singh was, I just knew she had super cool hair. As I read the book, I truly learned a ton, not only about who Lilly Singh is, but about YouTube - a social media outlet that I had never really used (but quickly realized I should). Ms. Singh’s conversational tone spoke to me.In a time when I am finding myself in more and more uncomfortable situations I take her advice to heart. For instance, as an author and inventor of a new baby product I have begun to get offers to do interviews with the media. I was even recently contacted by a casting director to be on a reality show.I typically don’t feel much like a bawse, so even the idea of speaking on camera freaks me out. I don’t even like to Skype or FaceTime with friends and family.As these appointments approached, I tried desperately to remember her advice about expanding out of your comfort zone. I struggled to show some sort of personality while interviewing for the reality show. I then studied her words prior to having my first media appearance on a news talk show. While I don’t think I succeeded in appearing as even a fraction of a bawse on either occasion, at least I tried. As tempted as I was to cancel both appointments, I showed up and did them. As Ms. Singh points out, the first ten times she does anything she is horrible at it. But those first ten times are crucial in order for her to be successful the eleventh time. I recognize that these are experiences that will help me to grow as a person. You must seek out situations that make you uncomfortable.Her book inspired me to start my own YouTube channel. Granted I can’t dance or sing (or perform in any way), but I can promote my books and products. I can also cook, so I’ve started my own weekly cooking “show”. It’s a start, anyway, and I can honestly say I was inspired by Lilly Singh.Now if you'll please excuse me - I must go buy some colorful towels.

Although I love Lilly Singh's vlog, movie, and lipstick, I was a little concerned that this book would be so filled with pop cultural references that the meat might get obscured. Happily not, and I should have known better! The book is interesting, fast-paced, and Lilly's tone comes through in every line. In addition, I love a woman who is not afraid to use semicolons correctly.

I haven't have finished this book yet, but it has already changed my life. I'm a 36 years young woman who found love with Lilly's positivity. I wanted to book because I'm looking forward to making big changes in my life and you the motivation. I have a 10 year old who was diagnosed with ADHD. We've been having issues with discipline and teaching him self-love. He read the first chapter because it was titled "Nintendo". This kid loves his video games. Because of her analogy, I was able to explain to my son that I was his Game Designer. When I set rules I am not the enemy. I am only making the rules to give him more skills and character. Now when we fight I remind him that I am not trying to hurt him I'm trying to grow him. Fights don't last long and he goes to bed reading "How to be a Bawse" every night! I think I'm going to have to order another book if I am going to read it.

I wasn't a fan of Lilly Singh at the time that I ordered and read this book. I can understand if some people are thrown off by the way the book reads, because it reads as if she is talking directly to the reader. To be honest, that method is very good and useful for books like this. Therefore after the first chapter I was fine and enjoyed how it read. I was pleased with the format. Within each chapter the reader will find a witty intro, very good sound advice, and wonderful examples in the form of her experiences. All of the chapters were put into sections that had a common purpose and each section ended with two pages labeled "Out of the Blue". These pages probably have the most strength to give because they compare her old life to her current, they seemingly bare the most impact. I believe this book is truly life changing if you let it be, and full of those aha! moments that we all have but forget in life. I encourage you to read it, so that you can add being a Bawse to your resume of life and to give yourself a chance to conquer it. Additional side effects are becoming curious about the author, watching her videos, and becoming a huge fan of what she stands for and her as a person.

This book has genuinely got me off my ass. She's honestly someone that has EARNED this recognition and her book speaks to the value of what she's earned. Speaking totally truthfully- the book is written in a tone that if you don't already know how she speaks. it takes a moment to get use to but this tone specifically speaks to the positivity of following your dreams, all the while kicking your ass into gear. It's my favorite book by far and 100% worth your money. I ordered copies for all my friends in the hopes of helping them to also be inspired to change their lives for the best.Ps I have both the hard cover and the audio book... try to order the hard cover because the quality of the book is genuinely amazing - beautiful photos, quality pages, vivid colors. Absolutely worth the shipping and handling price.Update: I’ve reread it multiple times and have gotten a job where I can build a career as well as taken numerous certifions to help people in lives. I first heard this book when the author read one of the stories during a National Public Radio interview. The stories were fun, children loved listening to them... especially the story about the coyote and the grass people (they make coyote fart)...Like most Native American stories they offer good stories that mean something to young, youth, and adult in different ways.I recommend this book. It is easy to read out loud if you are a storyteller, and just the right length to keep young childrens' attention.

Without violating the spirit of teaching serious lessons, this version makes Coyote and his animal companions funny on a comic book level. Coyote's inability to contain his mirth over a creature trying to save his life and paying the price, to his brother's immediate forgiveness and loving acceptance of Coyote's foolishness are funny in ways that early elementary kids see funny, or at least the way I remember it. The stories are made, like most Coyote stories, for reading aloud, but be forewarned: some sound effects may be required!

This book was one of my daughter's beloved books from childhood. It's meant to be read aloud. We made up a song to go with what the Grass People said to Coyote. They also play a trick on him, and it is fun to have a trick played on a trickster.Based on Native American story, this book has a lovely rhythm and sense of place. The stories are about Coyote, who is not always as clever as he thinks he is.Great fun

I am an avid fan of this tremendous artist. In 1990, I bought " The Great Gospel Women volumes. 1 and 2 " which highlighted the early superb work of Mahalia Jackson on Shanache Records. It was produced by Anthony Heilbut. I thought I would hear some dull, boring and uninspired singing. I was presently surprised. I heard music that captivated my ears and soul.Now for Mahalia Jackson... I thank Mr. Burford for opening the flood gates of her earlier career and the significance to the African American venacular in the early years of the 20th century. She embodies on two significant levels: First, God's continued promises for those who seek to be willing vessels in the service of the divine creative encounter and secondly, for creating a space in America for Black self expression in a religious/sacred context. Mahalia Jackson showed Black people and in particular (specifically Black women) that faith in self, faith in God and a determined spirit to live one's life on one's own terms can be achieved regardless of any hindrances that springs up in life such as sexism, racism etc...She opened up an unprecedented avenue and a creative path to express her faith about God that produced a new energizing spirit for marginalized people.Burford tells of Mahalia's early years from New Orleans to Chicago and the seeds that were firmly implanted in her that made her the premier Gospel Singer on wax!!!!I wish Mr. Burford would have had more space to talk about the early years of Gospel Music or the"Gospel Blues" movement that flooded into the northern city churches in Chicago. There was a belief of many Blacks (aka the talented tenth) in the thirties that if Black people took on the attributes and mores of the "majority society" they would be accepted as equals.The southern black person that began to migrate north did not think this way. They wanted to create "a space to be oneself" along with the economic freedom to have a space. With this conflict in ideology and socialogical thrust, the 1930s church setting viewed these opposing forces in the form of church service music performance of which Mahalia Jackson was a prime target. TA Dorsey, Theodore Frye, Magnolia Lewis Butts and Sallie Martin came together and cemented a creative compromise that produced Mahalia Jackson and many, many other great Gospel artists.What was produced was a fusion of Western Musicial idioms with the sacred passion of African American authentic expression that has yet to be surppassed even into the 21 century... (Think of Paverotti mixed with Bessie Smith).Mahalia Jackson came and enjoyed the following: national/international acclaim on Apollo Records, a national radio show, unheard of for a Black Woman which catapulted her to Columbia Records!!! While keeping her feet firmly planted with Black people and the admiration of the world.As I said, Burford has opened the door for more research because this music even today inspires and thrills the spirit of listeners. Mahalia Jackson needs further study also because she was the "Marcus Garvey" of the genre known as Gospel Music and achieved so much acclaim by being herself. She must be studied on many levels....You will have a thrill reading this book.
