I'm not usually a sci-fi reader, so I was surprised to find myself sucked into this series. The author did such a good job, in the first book, of establishing the main character and his friends as interesting personalities with complex interrelationships - of course, this made it something of a disappointment when the friends all but disappeared in the second book, replaced with long stretches of exposition in the form of Heyer's lectures. I wound up skimming though those chapters to get back to the humans relating to each other. I'm really hoping, in the third book, that the roommates will become more integral to the main plot - Jonathan could really use a Scooby gang.I've become well aware, while hurrying impatiently through the long stretches of sci-fi backstory and fight scenes, that I'm probably not exactly the intended audience for this series. However, the characters are so well-drawn that I will inevitably read the third installment when it comes out, in hopes of seeing them fleshed out further. So, if you like elaborate alien plot lines and building-crushing fight scenes, this book is for you! If you like angst and friendship and love in its many forms, well, it's gonna suck you in, too.
This sequel was such a great follow up to the first, words cannot describe the feelings that you feel throughout the book and by the last page you are just desperately yearning to read the next book. Truly a magnificent book.
This author is just amazing with how much depth and detail he puts into making you understand the way the MC feels and is thinking. I've never run into a MC that I feel I know like I do this one.The story is awesome, but the character building is truly masterful artwork.I can't wait for book three and highly recommend this book to anyone who really enjoys understanding of an MC.
This novel is excellent. Not only in a Sci-Fi sort of geeky way but excellently written for any genre.Johnathan' s battles with the Ferox are increasing in frequency and the skill of his opponents, then Rylee, another implant victim, drives from NY to Johnathan which creates conflicts not only between Leah and Johnathan but also with his benefactor.
I LOVED the first book but several times it seems very drawn out when it could have gotten the point across with less. I even found it hard to follow at times. You find yourself confused as to what is going on but eventually you learn what is happening. It's like you walked in halfway through the story at times.Spoiler: I does leave you hanging so there will be another book at some point. There are some characters that seem pointless but I suppose they will play a bigger role in the next book. I will say it would make for a Great movie!
So rare to find a book I don't want to put down these days and both The Never Hero and The Never Paradox have fit the bill. Excellent and fun character development, novel sci-fi, super heroes of both genders, sympathetic villains, pop culture references galore, and all backed up by really good writing. (I have even purchased the Audible versions so I could "toggle" between Kindle & Audible with little downtime. Is that REALLY the same narrator voicing Malkier?!?) Now the only issue is the couple of years before the next Never episode arrives. Anticipation is not a bad thing.
I do all my book reviews on Goodreads, but a short recap: the book picks up not too long after the first one ends. And while middle books can often just be getting the characters from point A to point B (much like middle movies), this book has point B and C, and then sets up for point D! The story moves along fairly quickly in most parts, and quite a bit of information is revealed.
I have this philosophy that everything has room for improvement. If anything, this book, just plain dazzles me. I give it 5 stars because it is just that good. I'm hardly qualified to give the author any advice to make it better. I truly enjoyed book one but book two took the story to a complete other level. The only thing I can say to make my experience any better would be to have the next book right in front of me now. If you take anything from this review Mr.
