This book was purchased based on a review at a different web site. Like so many art instruction books this one presumes the reader/artist is already capable of drawing realistically. The text that precedes the projects is OK, but lacks some very important information such as why all the projects drawn with brushes rather than easier to handle tools such as pencils or charcoal, etc. Other missing information includes suggested size to paint rather than leaving the student wonder if a 2" x 2" support is too small or a 8" x 10" canvas is too big (or too small) - or why such large brushes are suggested for such small paintings. The exercises (called projects in the book) could be great refreshers for an experienced artist or just a creativity nudge to get the painting day started. But this book is not for a beginner or novice artist. Believe me - I know - I am a novice, and this book is not helpful.

My 13 year-old and I have had fun painting together. We chose to use 8X8 and 12X12 canvas instead of the recommended 5X5. I think any square size would work. We went out frantically gathering the supplies the author recommended. I couldn't find the list on amazon anywhere. It would have been nice to be able to order everything all at once. For anyone interested, here are the basics that we purchased: #6, 8, and 10 round brushes #4 flat and filbert brushesThe author recommends synthetic brushes. We bought these at the local craft store. Probably could have gotten a better deal on amazon, but we didn't want to wait! Also, I would recommend a couple larger brushes (especially if you are thinking of using a larger canvas like we did). A detail brush is useful too (so you can sign your masterpiece!)The paint colors needed for all of the projects are: Titanium White Mars Black Cadmium Yellow Light Cadmium Orange Cadmium Red Medium Yellow Ochre Unbleached Titanium Ultra Marine Blue Light Blue Permanent Cobalt Blue Burnt Sienna Cerulean Blue Dioxazine Purple Phthalo BlueThe author goes into detail about buying decent brushes and paint. We chose the grade just above the disposable type and have been happy so far. As for the paint, we got the cheapest tubes available at the craft store. I'm sure a serious artist would have paid more attention, but we just wanted to get started!Overall, we spent around $100 total on supplies and the book. Sounds like a lot, but it will provide hours of entertainment for us!

Excellent! I'm new to painting and wanted some simple tutorials that were not technically overwhelming or produced discouraging results because it was too far above my skill level. I'm having a wonderful time painting these short projects! Thank you so much for producing this book. I feel like it's giving me a solid foundation to build on. I bought my paints and brushes in amazon as well and for under $50 (including this book) am ready to paint!

I've painted 46 out of 50 of the lessons in this book (in order) and I love it. The instructions are clear and complete, each lesson is well illustrated and presented in the same thoughtful & thorough way (5 steps, creating each small painting from a blank canvas to the finished product). The book starts out with very helpful suggestions & information about supplies, color (hue, value, saturation), and how to approach painting. The lessons themselves are arranged in 3 chapters in increasing order of complexity so skills learned early can be utilized and improved upon. When I complete the final four lessons I'm going to go back and do every one of them again, which brings me to my only regret - I wish there were more lessons from this author. Maybe he'll create a follow-up??

These 50 little paintings are addictive. I looked at the first painting in the book when I got the book, and rushed out immediately to get some acrylic paints to try it because it looked like something I could do, but it was pretty. I've been painting one almost every day since I got the book and getting better and better. I look forward to painting when I get up in the morning. Some of the paintings in the beginning look pretty simple (but sometimes they're harder than they look!), but they're teaching important lessons. The paintings get progressively more challenging and more detailed as you go through the book. I think almost all of them are very interesting paintings. There's a wide variety of painting styles and types, and I really like that. I've never painted with acrylics before, but I've done a little drawing and watercolors off and on for years.

I am in love with this book! I have cut and prepped my 50- 5 by 5 wood pieces to do the 50 paintings. This is my New Year's resolution to get back into painting and I thought this book would be the book to make this project a reality. I can't wait to get to the painting of the balloon dog and the clothes pin. Not only am I looking forward to learning all the techniques, I can't wait to display them all when they are finished. The step-by step tutorials are easy to understand and the techniques look so interesting.

I expected this to be more of a chemistry book, but it isn't. It's more focused on Earth science and environmental science. As such, it does a good job. It goes through the standard things you would expect like the water cycle, erosion, ocean depth, ice bergs, ocean life, etc. There were some places where it went into more interesting depth, for example, the varying degrees of salinity in different bodies of water. The text is engaging and the pictures are well done. The layout is also impressive.My biggest disappointment was just that so much of it overlapped with so many other science books we have so my kids were a little bored. At this point, they understand the water cycle, that the ocean is deep and that animals live there.The environmental science was more interesting and less commonly found it science books, but didn't interest my kids as much (I think it will as they get older). It did cover topics like drought and rain, global warming (of course!), dams and waste water. I thought these topics were covered in a balanced way.It's a good science book but it may not cover a lot that other books in your library don't - especially if you already have earth science or environmental science books. In that genre however, it is excellent.I would love to see a book focused on some other aspect of water - such as how it's different from other molecules and how unusual it is in the chemical world. And I would have preferred that this book pick a focus - such as water scarcity or humans and water rather than just being called "water."

I've bought this a second time because its my 6 year olds favorite book and he wore out his first one.

I love reading this to my 5 year old son for bedtime. We'll choose a few pages and talk about everything we've learned. I always learn something new too.

There aren’t many books on Plants on Amazon site. This is good book to teach my 4 yr old about Photosynthesis, etc. This book requires adult to read kids.

Bought a bunch of this series for my Grandson for Christmas . . . He loves them so much, I bought the rest for his birthday . . . and his cousins love them so much I am going to have to buy the set for all my kids families.

We got this for a unit study with Harry Potter (through Build Your Library). It has wonderful photography, easy to understand descriptions, and the poster and CD are a great bonus!

The book was a bit thinner than I thought. (Didn't read the dimensions)It contains lots of basic information on plants, with interesting bits scattered everywhere.The pictures are clean and beautiful.The book comes with a Clip-Art CD, but doesn't even compare to actually looking inside the book. (Very low definition images.) It also comes with a nice folded-poster.Still, overall a very worthwhile buy. I also purchased the 'Insect' book as well and it rates the same.Purchased for $11.85, and got free 2-day shipping with my Amazon Student account.Great addition to our home library. 5 stars.

Very good advice when developing and deploying microservices.

Not worth the money. It's one of those books that constantly points you to a URL in order to learn about different technologies. Defeats the purpose of buying a book in my opinion. Doesn't go in-depth about anything. Hard to see who would benefit from this book.

This book is really good for a number of reasons.1. great introduction to .NET Core - I've done a little with .NET Core but this is making more of it solidify.2. Very current - It's just been published in Sept 20173. I've been wanting a book on MicroServices but something that walks me through building good code examples and this has that too.4. Learning microservices allows me to learn some new architectural concepts.5. The book is written really well too so it is a fast read.6. Microservices are implemented in Docker so I'll finally get to wrestle with that a bit too.Additionally, the introduction to .NET Core is very good because it gives you exactly what you need to try it out without overwhelming at the first parts of the book.Author does a great job of explaining microservices architecture in context of actual working code and best-practices like CI (continuous integration) etc.A fantastic read which provides a lot of value.

very nice to read if Max or Linux is your dev environment. If you are focused on Windows, you're lost after chapter 1 as it does not explain how to use/install docker on the Linux subsystem for Windows.Does "The new Linux subsystem for Windows 10 ...still isn't ideal" (page ix) mean "don't use it, it's buggy" ?Also the fact that Visual Studio comes with a nice Docker integration is completely left out.

This is one of the worst books. It's very brief, lazy and poorly put together. It only touches on the topics, and doesnt lay the concepts out at all. It briefly mentions stuff, and then points you to a url or git repo. Theres no good foundation of the microservice principles. I'm glad I already knew what CQRS/ES was, because the chapter would lose anybody with it's poor and brief information, and complicated and confusing code example. This is how every chapter is. It should have been a 500pg book, not 200.

This book is a great introduction to drilling, but not without its troubles. Devereux accomplishes what he sets out to do by giving a comprehensive overview of the the industry with as little jargon as possible. Most of the discussion and accompanying figures are easily understood, helpful, and enjoyable.The troubles start with vague and unclear writing. Sure the language is simple, but the writing often leads to confusion with ambiguous subject and object references. There are also factual issues, the first of which is encountered on page four as a reference to the mantle as liquid rock. This, and other inaccuracies, leaves the reader questioning the possibility of other mistakes. Some figure number references are questionable. Overall this book could use a serious revision.

It also referred to a list of acronyms, supposedly containted within, which wasn't in the book either. It could really use an editor.Diagrams were great, so were the pictures. I purchased this as a required textbook for a Strategic Marketing course. In that regards it's perfect in that I have assigned readings from it, each week. It is not at all inspiring, dry in places, and some of the examples could be updated. For instance, their example regarding Apple is a great description of the company's brand associations and positioning of 10 years ago (the book still refers to them as Apple Computer) and makes no mention of any of the brand development that firm has undergone since. That said, it get's the concepts across, but I think if it hadn't been written a as a college textbook (in accocordance with a textbook publisher's business model) the information could have been transferred more effectively and inspiringly - in probably half to two thirds of the pages. I think the idea is if it weighs more, it must be worth more.As I said, it does the job. The writing is easy to understand. I'm learning things from it. I will not be keeping it past the end of semester.Through Amazon, I purchased it for half the price it was selling for at the University Co-op.

This was required reading for me. I found this book to be dry much of the time, though loaded with interesting facts. What bothered me the. Out we're the amount of typos found within the text. It's a nit picky thing, but it bugged me nonetheless.

The one marketing book that I wish I would've bought instead of renting. It had such great material in it that I would honestly probably read some of it on my own just because. There's great cases within the book to show actual examples and makes things very easy to understand!

This textbook worked very well for class. There were no pages missing and it helped me to a good grade. I recommend this textbook to anyone taking this course, or just looking to learn more.

I have been using sketchup for almost 6 years now. This is my 8th or 9th book purchase to learn sketchup as best I can.. I meant to purchase this book upon its release and now I'm kicking myself for procrastinating. So, if you are in two minds on making your own purchase don't procrastinate, place your order today.The book starts with a hefty promise: to "elevate your sketchup skill and design workflow to the highest radical extremes of efficiency" and it delivers on this promise - in spades and then some.Chapter's 1,2 & 4 were pretty straight forward and would be invaluable to a beginner. For me the book really began to deliver on its promise from chapter three and especially chapter 5 and onward.The author starts by getting you organized, not just in SketchUp and layout, but first on your computer by dictating how and where to download files and provides a great organizational structure for project management. How many times have you saved a project file as "Project xyz final" only to have that revised and saved as final version 2, or Final final V3?. I thought I already had a pretty good project management file structure... now it's even better.In chapters 5 & 6 the author imparts a strict regimen that will enable one to use scenes not just as a presentation of images for a project, but as a powerful tool in itself, to save you time and maximize the efficiencies that are inherent in SketchUp. (if only we knew).Within hours of reading these chapters I had set up my own regimen incorporating most of the methods outlined to add to my own templates. I now feel more in control than ever before and the time I will save in the future will be considerable, due to the improved workflows that Michael clearly and succinctly explains in his book.The layout chapters (9-13) were also very well explained and would be an awesome introduction for beginner and intermediate users, who wish to turn 3D models into 2D and 3D construction documents.The entire book is very well written. It explains many of the settings one should set up that are normally overlooked , even if you have been using SketchUp for many years.. There's just a lot of stuff you don't know, you don't know. The books strengths are in clearly communicating very detailed settings to explain the guts of SketchUp tools and dialogue settings, so you use them properly and efficiently to not only just work faster, but to also communicate ideas, concepts, and construction documents to a greater intensity and clarity. The book has lots of images with very specific details for setting up SketchUp, on almost every single page. The only improvement I would suggest for later editions is to make those images a little larger. The highlighted in blue tips were also a nice touch. and the accompanying tutorials and additional data available on his website are a godsend and invaluable to haveLong live Sketchup - It rocks. As does this book: Two thumbs up and five stars all the away.Rashad

I really like this book as it is very useful information. In fact I never knew Sketchup had such power built in. But one thing could be better in the next edition. Make the screen shots 1.5x to 2x bigger. The screen shots are vital information for some of the procedures and much information is so small that the half tone dots in the image make it hard to see even with a magnifying glass.Otherwise, I love that this book assumes you are familiar with Sketchup or know where to get beginner information. The organization of any CAD project requires a system for success. This author knows architecture, Sketchup, and how to usefully tie them together. I have been weary of using Sketchup as a CAD program as it seemed too limited. But this book clearly spells out how to do it.Sketchup is a less expensive program, but that is not the strongest argument for using it. While Sketchup does not have a lot of automated and parametric features built in, it does give you compete control over your design and documentation. Many highly automated CAD programs can get you along way faster, but you will find yourself fighting the automation to do any customization. Much of the automation in other CAD programs is there to sell the program. You trade control, flexibility and simplicity in Sketchup for automation, hype and confusing work-arounds in overly developed BIM/CAD programs.The other thing that would help in this book is to show a few screen-shots for Mac users when the dialog boxes are different, and they are quite different sometimes.In any case, if you are curious about how to make Sketchup a viable app for architecture, I would highly recommend this book.

This is a very good guide for SketchUp and architecture. Many good tips. Unfortunately books like this become dated very quickly. It suffers badly from link rot, and changes in S/U. (like no more google earth support) But you can find him and his online content if you look. His web presence is rather clunky, but his well thought out system has encouraged me to try using SketchUp for both 3d modeling and construction documents on my current project. My last project was designed in S/U and drafted in a conventional autocad clone, with all the attendant headaches & extra work. Will update my review upon completion.

There are so many ways that this book has touched me; it's difficult to find a place to begin.I read this book after reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns" because I was beginning to really become aware of how many of our fellow brothers and sisters in other places in the world have the same desires that we do in the United States: to raise our children with a sense of morality, the determination to make more of oneself, and the endurance to keep going in horrific times and situations.The narrator of this story is so breathtakingly honest that I feel that his conscience is only open to me. This story allows me to recognize that more than likely every human who has ever walked this earths has had moments of deep regret, and that if we could, we would go back and redo as we examine how life could have been different if other choices were made.Reading this book has made this far away place seem so much closer - and its people much more understandable to me. It's an emotional read but a must-read for all who, like me, have not read a book like it.

I had never heard of this book until last September at back to school night. My daughter's sophomore English teacher listed the books they would be reading this school year and as he read off Kite Runner, he said "it had one disturbing part". Well, that meant I needed to read it before my daughter did.I found many more than one part of it disturbing especially as a novel for teenagers. Kite Runner is dark, depressing, descriptive of violence and in my opinion, not a good choice for high school students.Khaled Hosseini is a talented writer but I fail to understand why high school students should be analyzing a fictional novel dramatizing so many dark topics and adult subject matter. I thought I had read the "one disturbing part" in Chapter 7, homosexual rape, but Kite Runner continues with a series of painful, life altering, distressing and depressing event after event throughout the book to the very last chapter.I've never read a book with so much trauma happening to it's characters (and then I read Hosseini's other book A Thousand Splendid Suns). Kite Runner starts with a dysfunctional family (a son who does not feel loved by his single father) and a dysfunctional "friendship" between boys due to their cultural cast system. A physical birth disfigurement, cowardice, cover up lies, and betrayal are touched on. War atrocities are covered including more homosexual rape, gun violence, power struggles, and the flight of refugees. This novel also ties in cancer, infertility, adultery, a bastard child, deception, more violence including a public stoning, innocent victims killed in broad daylight, child servitude and attempted suicide. Many reviews mention the main character's courage to seek redemption but I found the circumstances overly dramatized and any meaningful aspects of redemption washed out.Kite Runner ends with a glimmer of hope for better times but after the countless events of trauma, violence and brutality, emotionally and physically throughout the book, the hopeful ending only makes a dull thud against the depressing, dark, adult topics depicted and graphically described throughout the book.I fail to see why Kite Runner is being selected over countless other great pieces of literature. I do not feel this book is a necessary read to understanding the complex differences of Afghanistan's culture nor it's history. I am not opposed to high school students being exposed to different cultures or adult topics but of the literary options that are available, I do not feel Kite Runner offers educational value that exceeds the depressing nature of this book and the descriptive imagery of countless depressing adult topics that have happened in Afghanistan and are probably still happening in Afghanistan. I prefer my 15 year old to learn about Afghanistan in a neutral, historical style rather than taking an emotional ride with fictional characters.It astounds me that over 4,000 readers rate this book with 5 stars. My question to them is how many of them would choose this book over another book for their high school students.

My 16 year old daughter was assigned this book to read in school. I often read my high school aged children's literature assignments but rarely have I been so riveted by one. This story is not for the faint of heart. It's down right brutal at times and the language and subject matter are such that adults should think carefully before allowing their younger teens to read. But for older and more mature teens, there are important lessons to be learned. And for a born and bred American, it's refreshing to get a middle eastern perspective on the world that is honest and thoughtful. I don't know if it's accurate to say I enjoyed reading this book but I was certainly enriched by the experience.

When I picked this book up, I was very intrigued and satisfied as it was a very good read. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini details a life story of a young boy, Amir who grows up looking for redemption as a result of his betrayal to his half-brother Hassan. Throughout the novel, Hosseini delves into the mind of Amir who, in the beginning of the novel, is a young boy living with his father and best friend/half brother in Kabul, Afghanistan. As a loyal friend, Hassan, despite being a Hazara, always defends Amir and himself against the pashtun boys for being friends despite Amir and Hassan’s difference in social stature. Soon, they split apart after Amir betrays Hassan. Feeling the consequences of his cowardice, Amir sets out to find redemption for his inaction as he goes to save Hassan’s son from the Taliban after Hassan passes. Throughout the novel, Hosseini recounts the story through the first person mind of Amir whose guilt-driven consciousness drives the plot. Hosseini weaves the idea that redemption is important because sin is enduring throughout the story. He explains that Amir seeks to help Sohrab, Hassan’s son, as he realizes that he has been “peeking into that deserted alley for the last twenty-six years.” It becomes apparent that his cowardice and betrayal towards Hassan has plagued his consciousness with guilt. Without relief, he cannot live a normal life that he had tried to build in the United States.The title of the book also reveals an important aspect of the plot as the kite fighting tournaments become essential to understanding the underlying meaning of the story. Kite fighting in the beginning of the novel represents the distinct dichotomy that was occurring at that in Afghanistan between the Pashtuns and the Hazaras, but it also represents the strong bond between the half brothers. In the end, the kite fighting represents the promising future that was ahead of Sohrab and Amir. Hosseini reveals that Amir had “looked down at Sohrab. One corner of his mouth curled up just so. A smile.” Although, he has sinned in the beginning, Amir finally finds his redemption and relief within Sohrab.Overall, this book was very captivating as it keeps readers on their toes throughout the entire story. One can feel a sort of connection with the narrator further aiding the reader the importance of redemption. I would give this book five stars.
