About the Author

Markus Montola (M.Soc.Sc.) is a grant researcher in the University of Tampere Gamelab research group and a doctoral candidate in Literature and the Arts. Before being given a three-year dissertation grant by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, he worked as a project researcher and manager in the Gamelab, since the year 2004. His dissertation work discusses various forms of role-playing and pervasive gaming. He has already edited two books on role-playing with Jaakko Stenros (Playground Worlds, 2008, and Beyond Role and Play, 2004) and works in the board of the upcoming International Journal on Role-Playing. He has published about a dozen book chapters and conference papers on Pervasive Games and is a known expert on the topic of pervasive games. The most significant award given to Markus Montola is the three-year research grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation: Only 1-2 are given to each broad field annually.Stenros is currently a researcher at the Game Reserch Lab at the University of Tampere. Stenros is one of the key people in the Nordic role-playing movement. He has written extensively on role-playing games, both in and out of academia, has edited two books with Markus Montola on role-playing games and has published numerous papers and reports on pervasive games. Before returning to academia in 2006 Stenros made a career as a trainer and customer support manager in data security company F-Secure. Stenros has the unique combination of skills required to tackle the cultural contexts that pervasive games tap into: Having worked as a journalist and a critic he has an extensive understanding of popular culture; his background in sociology helps ground the observations, and his understanding of the unique Nordic live action role-playing scene has been instrumental in approaching pervasive games.

I had the pleasure of pre-reading this book in draft before it came out. Seeing its final version, I was nevertheless amazed. The primary authors, along with the 15 other contributors, have created by far the best published work on pervasive games. It draws the material from around the world, ranging from global ARGs to reality TV and small Nordic larps, as well as studies conducted on those and more. Furthermore, it creates a seamless merger of it all, being able to confidently discuss pervasive games as a phenomenon, not a bunch of events organized by isolated cliques. It is holistic, yet attentive to minute detail.The topics range from history to the ethics of involving unaware people in play. Nearly half of the book is nevertheless dedicated to design concerns, making it an invaluable tool to anyone developing or researching pervasive games (or ARGs, or larps, for that matter). As this is done in the context of examples - some of them successes, others clear failures - it is easy to pick useful ideas from those presented. I would have liked a few more case examples on some topics, such as the problem of people entering and leaving such games mid-way, but I presume this was simply not feasible due to a page limit. And I can but applaud the authors' decision not to do everything by themselves, meaning that some case examples and sections on things like marketing and art-games are written by experts in those particular subjects.This book is something one may agree or disagree with, but never ignore, if one works in the field of pervasive games in any fashion. Both the designer and the game studies professional in me find it immensely valuable. It is also a damn enjoyable read.

This is an extremely smart and engaging book - it works as introduction and as authoritative overview, but it's lively and interesting and without any of the tedium one associates with that sort of volume! Very highly recommended for anyone with an interest in performance studies more generally.

This book looks at a broad spectrum of pervasive games and opened my eyes a bit. It discusses pragmatics of design as well as theory (according to its own framework) and ethics. Also helpful are the references for further reading. I read it cover to cover.

I thinks this book is too theoretical or philosophical to get something practical.I was able to feel the authors had tried to write down their brilliant view or insight in the book, but it was not possible to feel the in-field expert's power from the book.

I've let this book simmer for a while. I'm not a big reader anymore; that is, I read a lot, but in the fragmented and impatient way I've been taught by the internet. Reading through several hundred pages in one go isn't for me, these days, if it ever was.So I've attacked the book from several angles. Jumping into one chapter, checking out a reference to another, occasionally googling interesting games or reading up on the book's official blog. And, luckily for me, the book lends itself well to this form of reading. The text is full of interesting tidbits, fun and strange ideas that provide inspiration and matter for reflection. Jumping back and forth through the chapters also highlights a specific feature of the book: There are many voices, many situated authors, many discernibly different agendas*. These multiple frames of reference make for a multifaceted view of the pervasive games phenomenon.While creators of pervasive games are often good at hyping their own games, making it sound like they've changed the lives of everyone involved and are on the verge of creating a social revolution, the editors let the projects speak for themselves; they describe the games objectively, cite research and questionnaire responses, and let the reader make up his/her own mind as to the quality and effects of the game. This is refreshing and relaxing after reading so many hyped-up articles about different pervasive projects. It also makes reading chapters like "Art and Politics of Pervasive Games" more rewarding; having facts** contrasted with vision and opinion make both parts stand out more clearly.All in all, this is a brilliant book both for laymen, designers and researchers. I recommend it heartily, and remain a fan-boy.* The weakest part, in my opinion, is the case study on "Mystery on Fifth Avenue", written by Eric Clough; Clough is the founder of 212box, the creators of the aforementioned mystery. While the project is interesting, the author is clearly in love with his own project, and describes it in such sickeningly-sweet syrupy language that the whole thing sounds like a Disney X-mas special.** I'm not using the term "dry facts", because the book is too interesting.

I have long worked in ministry under the conviction that the Spirit of God can reach people most powerfully within the context of their God-given culture. Having served as a Bible translator for some 16 years among a people whose culture was in most ways diametrically opposed to my own, I found great comfort in knowing the if we were faithful in translating the Scriptures in their language, the way of applying that message in their lives could and should be left up to the local people. I am encouraged that the message of Jesus is beginning to find full expression among the First Nations people groups of North America in their local contexts. Thank you to Richard Twiss! Though he is no longer with us, his work will continue to bear fruit for generations to come!

Gang-Ding Peng received the B.Sc. degree in physics from Fudan University, Shanghai, China, in 1982, and the M.Sc degree in applied physics and the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China, in 1984 and 1987, respectively. From 1987 through 1988 he was a lecturer of the Jiao Tong University. He was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Optical Sciences Centre of the Australian National University, Canberra, from 1988-1991. He has been working with University of NSW in Sydney, Australia since 1991, was a Queen Elizabeth II Fellow from 1992-1996 and is currently a Professor in the same university. He is a fellow and life member of both OSA and SPIE. His research interests include silica and polymer optical fibers, optical fiber and waveguide devices, optical fiber sensors and nonlinear optics. He has worked in the field of photonics and optical fiber technology for more than 20 years and maintained a high research profile internationally. He has made significant contributions to the field with more than 200 reviewed journal papers, 14 book & book chapters, 200 conference papers) and >30 invited presentations, and through extensive international collaborations. As I'm partial to Warren W. Wiersbe's commentaries, and the size of this is so compact, it is great to have. It is, of course not as complete as his study commentaries, but gives enough succinct information to definitely assist when studying the Bible on the run, traveling, or just not wanting to do an in-depth exploration of each chapter. His research and way of wording things generally helps clarify things more than most. It helps me find more quickly the key material I want to learn and study even more fully. The print is crisp and easy to read as well.

My husband first bought this book many years ago and it is a family stable. Our grown children both have it and my husband has bought numerous copies for anyone who showed interest in the Bible. It is easy to read and Warren Wiersbe really infuses his own experiences in with Biblical ones. No one's personal nor professional library should be without it. Highly recommend!!

Reading the topic of the chapter from this prior to reading the actual chapter from the bible has really opened up my understanding and intent when reading my KJV AV1611. I read the bible daily at minimum twice a day and one can miss meaning or intent of certain chapters or versus and miss the main intent or meaning.What I do now is after prayer (prior to reading the bible) I read this topic of the chapter from "With The Word" to help set the expectation, meaning and intent of the chapter - then I read the chapter in the bible and immediately I begin to gain new insight due to the fact that I recall what I read from the "With The Word" and it just brings it all TOGETHER! Again, it adds an exciting way to read the bible - I do believe this is a must to have the bible open up to you!

We are reading through the New Testament as a congregation this year and are using this book as a companion to the Bible. I like that the author specifically states in the introduction that his book is not a substitute for the Bible but to be read alongside it. He does a great job applying each chapter of scripture to our lives.

I like the size of the book. It is easy to fit in your hand to read. His comments are very clear and concise. He provide excellent insight to the meaning of Bible passages. Also, he gives you some things to think about and apply to your own life.

Excellent tools to do the preparation for the Sunday School class for all ages. It is easy to understand. I always love Pastor Wiersbe's Be Series. This book that I have read in daily basis during my devotional time makes my study soothing. Anyone who loves to study God's Word; I encourage him/her purchase the book. He or she will be blessed and well-nourished..

For someone who is not very familiar with the Bible it is a good recourse. Some, a few, of his statements are a little far out, I think. But there is NOTHING there that goes against Gods Word. Lewis

I've used Wiersbe OT and NT commentaries for years now, I don't know why I never thought to buy this handbook. What a breeze to work on messages when I can begin with Wiersbe's outlines and key notes, and add my own illustrations and relevant material for the group I'm addressing. I praise God for Warren Wiersbe and other great preachers who have written their messages down and made them available for all of us to use to advance the kingdom of God.

I pre-ordered this book and received it a day or two after it came out. That was over 4 months ago. No software comes with the book, you must d/l it from a website. No problem except that after 4 months of the book being on the shelf, the lessons and video tutorials are STILL not available on the website. Back in January I submitted a help request about the missing lessons. They emailed me back the files for lesson 1 and 2 and stated the rest should be up on the website within a few weeks. Now 4 months later, there are still no lesson files, and a link to the "video tutorials" that takes you to tutorials on Adobe Flash, not Photoshop.
