I just received this map and compared it to my National Geographic map. I like this one better. The NG map is folded better (smaller for a backpack) and seems more waterproof (thicker material), but this Tom Harrison map is much easier to read. It has a better map of the trails, topo, roads, etc. I wish there was a Tom Harrison map for every National Park area in the country, but seems to only be available of the Western coast area. I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5 because the map is only on one side. The backside is blank. I would think that wasted space could be put to better use......closeup of areas, etc. or even some photographs of landmarks. Anything.

If you are backpacking, the Tom Harrison maps are the goto maps. I've tried others. I don't use GPS devices. I use a map, a compass, and an altimeter. So I need something that does a good job showing altitudes at targeted spots, shows contour lines clearly (although topos do a little better job), and identify the kinds of peaks I can use to take bearings. the Harrison maps do that better than most. I mean, this one's a no-brainer. Everyone uses these maps for backpacking.

I think Tom Harrison maps are the best. Durable paper, good map details. I usually just photocopy a one-page section of these maps that I'm going to, on a particular trip, so that I don't need to bring the whole map. The map photocopies well since its clear and not too overly detailed as to be muddled. Overall, I prefer Tom Harrison maps over the Nat Geo maps, or the National Forest Service maps... but Nat Geo and NFS maps are okay too.

The map is fine. It's waterproof and includes the majority of the popular (and not so popular) hiking trails of SEKI.But this map isn't particularly useful once you're on the trail. Here's why:1. Despite how well-marked the High Sierra Trail is on this map, almost none of the backcountry campsites are plotted. I only have experience with the HST, but I imagine this is true of other trails as well. It would be incredibly helpful for both planning and hiking if the campsites were on the map along with the distances between them.2. Again, despite how well-marked the HST is on the map, the distance markers aren't particularly "useful." It's difficult, using the map alone, to determine distances between campsites and other relevant spots along the trail. To be fair, major distances, like those between trail intersections, are plotted and somewhat useful, but the scale isn't fine enough to determine other distances.3. The distances which are plotted differ (sometimes not inconsequentially) from the National Park Service trail markers. And those, in turn, differ from what my GPS measures.While the map is useful, there are other free resources which are equally or more useful for planning a backcountry trip than this particular Tom Harrison map. Google is your friend.

Not a lot to say about a map but the TH maps really are top notch. They are lightweight and durable and pack up or pocket a lot easier than the nat geo maps. I go back and forth between TH and NG maps and I prefer the TH. Nat geo provides more detail but a lot of it is unnecessary for my purposes. I would give 5 stars except they leave out elevation for certain places on the map that I think should be included.

Really good map with all the critical things mentioned and included on the map.. like Bear Box locations!!.. Harrison maps are the best, but also the priciest..

Very nice map for planning a trip to Sequoia and King National park. Includes roads, sites to see and trails.

Easy to read map spent 3 days in the sequoia national park and it was a great tool to not get lost.

I am shocked...SHOCKED...that this book has such a high rating. At the very, very beginning I enjoyed Mimi, the main character. She struggled with weight like most women. She had imperfections like most women. She had family issues like most women. I could relate to her. However, the author totally lost me when Mimi's bunion began to talk to her in the grating voice of Edith Bunker! "Meeeeeemeeeeee." And she began referring to her bunion as Edith Bunker to other people! It didn't give the character a sense of humor but a psychosis. I thought I could suffer through the numerous bunion references and her alter egos of Stan and Ollie, but I couldn't do another page after a quickie on a New York City carriage ride with a guy who is engaged to another woman. It cheapened her for me. She wasn't quirky and cute after all. She was pitiful and desperate...not my kind of heroine.

This book attracted me with its colorful cover and chicklit flair. But midway through, I tossed it aside, bored, unsatisfied, annoyed. Maybe something is wrong with my taste, because obviously lots of people loved it! This felt like the Shopoholic Series - very very sweet candy with no nutritional value and which starts to cloy a mature palette after you ingest a substantial amount. Yet, no matter how much you eat, you never get full. (The author is a fan of Sophie Kinsella - it makes sense). So, yes. Millions will love this book, but after I put it aside in irritation, seeking comfort and solace, I had to reach for books from my adolescence by authors like Victoria Holt - books with carefully and beautifully constructed sentences; complex, admirable heroines; layers and subtleties of emotion; a sense of time and place. Those books were a satisfying, timeless, meal. Instead this book featured a shallow, idiotic heroine who acts crazy and lusts after a rude man for no particular reason, then is magically madeover into the most attractive and sought-after woman around. Silly.

What a fun read! Every woman can relate to at least some part of Mimi. From feeling "less than" when she compares herself to her sisters, to obsessing over a man who might not be good for her, to trying to lose that weight, to having a gay/not gay friend to share all your insecurities with, Mimi is each one of us at some point in our life. If it weren't so many weight watchers points, I'd love to share a bottle or wine with Mimi and talk about it all.Whitney Dineen keeps us guessing who, if anyone, Mimi will end up with. Kevin, Richard, Elliott? Throughout, we see Mimi become more confident in her body and career. Most of all, I love that Mimi gives the voices in her head an actual voice, and sometimes even names. No, she's not schizophrenic, she just let's us in on all of her doubts, fears, insecurities and, thankfully, her triumphs.Mimi is a fast read, great for the beach, pool, or simply to escape your own world and live in Mimi's for just a while.

I loved Mimi. It was the first book in a long time that I have laughed out loud while reading. I love a good mystery and a book that makes me feel empathy for the characters but they are much more common these days then those with a little bit of fun. Mimi becomes the friend you would like to know and hang out with. Bless her for her problems but bless her too for her solutions. She is a " Bridget Jones Diary" kind of gal and I hope they make a movie out of how Mimi copes with her "ordinary life problems".Thank you author Whitney Dineen for making this character so delightful.

I think this book is 3.5 stars, so when faced with the big decision to go with 3 or 4, I decided that I kept reading when I could, it kept my mind off my morning sickness (so maybe 5 stars?!), and I did enjoy reading it.Mimi is funny and the book is fast paced. The development among her sisters is heart-warming.What I wasn't always mad on was the dialogue and situation with her love interests. It's probably hard to describe without a spoiler alert, and as mentioned it didn't stop me reading, but the declarations of one New York suitor to wait for her while she chased after another man (and he got other women's phone numbers stuffed in his pockets) seemed totally unrealistic, while the shadiness surrounding the man she was chasing seemed to be treated as more "this is a giant pain in the arse for me" rather than "I know this is awful but I can't seem to control myself". It also wrapped up a bit too easily.But I read it quickly, I generally enjoyed the writing and I would recommend to anyone looking for a light-hearted escape.

If you want a book with high quality photograph reproductions you should try another book.This is a book of maps, historical photos and recent photos of the D-Day sites. Most pages are 3/4 or more photo and map with the remaining portion of the page being caption. The captions and explanations are very good and add a lot of value. Many of the historical photographs are juxtaposed with a modern aerial photo of the same area. The maps and historical B/W photos are reproduced well here but the recent color images are dull and the aerial photos are sometimes poorly focused.The D-Day sites themselves are well worth a visit. Two years ago I visited the D-Day beaches and cemetery with a tour and on a blustery April day many French school kids and families were visiting the sites.

This book makes the D-Day battle sights come alive, at least in this readers opinion. We have all seen the black and white photos, and newsreels. But viewing these sights in color really brings them alive, color makes all the difference. It is still amazing that these brave men managed to establish a foothold, and drive inland in the face of determined german resistance. The germans knew that the cross channel invasionhad to come, they prepared for it , and it still suceeded, in spite of Rommel's best efforts. This book is well worth buying for anyone interested in WW2, it adds another dimension to this stirring story. JRV

My wife and I have been to several WWI and WWII battlefields and national cemetaries. This book has great photos and is an easy read. For those of you that have been to Normandy, it will vividly bring back your visit. For those who have not gone, this book will give you a decent overview of the invasion's successes and failures. It has a lot of information as well: Most Americans do not know that there were more British and Canadian troops in the invasion than American; that 80% of the ships that took part were British and that aside from Eisenhower, the four other top commanders under him including his top deputy and those commanding land, sea and air operations were all British. This book honors all who fought and died and survived during the invasion and is worthy of reading.

There’s a lot here. The research looks to be impeccable—gratefully without the usual—look how wonderfully the Commonwealth troops performed while the poor Americans foundered. Getting harder and harder to find that as history is slowly rewritten.The passages are apparently backed by informative photographs. The problem is they scale poorly if you try to enlarge them, to even a small degree—no big shock for 70 year-old prints. And the captions get difficult to follow since they’re rarely on the same page as their photograph, but sometimes are—back & forth etc.However, since it’s electronic, you’re able to take screenshots of everything you’d like to see and then use it as a very handy guide—as I plan to during my 75th anniversary visit next year. Should be much easier than the books with notes I used for the 70th anniversary visit 5 years back.If this is your only source with no visit planned, definitely buy the hard copy.

Bought as a companion book to After the Battle Then and Now book on Normandy. It did not have the heft or volume of those books and that was why I could not give it more stars. Some of the shots from above are fantastic, There just not enough of them

I like "Then and Now" photographs and the effort the current photographer tries to shoot from the same point of view to compare spaces and time was lacking in this book which I find would have it easier to envision the changes of the battle fields terrain and landmarks. Perhaps this was not the intention of the author to present this form of photographic detail. On in all if you are a D-Day scholar and buff you will get enjoyment from adding this book in your collection..

My brother has always been fascinated with WWII. Our dad fought in the European Theater through the whole war so we have heard many stories. Dad parachuted into the Normandy frey. My brother and his family will be going there this year and he was so happy to get this book. Thank you.
