3.5 STARS if that were possible.Many, like me, probably will pick this book up after watching the movie Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot with Tina Fey. From that perspective I was both disappointed AND rewarded. If you've read other non-fiction accounts in the many political and military hotspots around the world, then you will most likely enjoy what is recounted here. If on the other hand 99% of what you read is fiction and you generally like to keep it light, I doubt this book will be your thing. I fall firmly into the former category and love books by journalists who are willing to go right to the edge in order to make sure the world doesn't ignore what's important. I believe Kim Barker did her best to be one of these journalists, but sadly wasn't taken as seriously (because of being a woman) both on the ground and back home where journalism of this kind was drying up.COMPARISONS: The movie is much more linear and the scripting/story arc greatly tightened up. Plus it's funnier. On the other hand this book is so much more interesting and three dimensional than the movie, which in reality takes only about 1/3 of the book as it's source material. It also puts much more emphasis on the romantic and sexual relationships of the author, which in the book hardly happen at all. The movie almost makes these as primary plot movers, and it's obvious that they were all little more than tangential to Ms. Barker in her real life.Towards the end of the book she basically admits that writing the book was as much a form of PTSD self-therapy as anything else. That doesn't invalidate the writing at all, but it does point out that it's not the sort of book that has a "story" or over-arching theme to follow. It's just like a lot of life and meaning isn't always easy to wring out of it. In that light, the book is definitely uneven at times, and rambles all around. But it is also honest and insightful, and an important voice against the apathy and dumbing down of US foreign journalism. It's partly an indictment against the lazy and often deadly approach the US takes to its foreign policy, though this judgment is not partisan, nor does it let the countries in question off the hook. It's because she ends up loving Afghanistan that she becomes so disillusioned by it's leaders and competing factions.

Bought the book after seeing the movie "Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot". I enjoyed the movie but the book gives a much deeper look into the whole issue of the what the US is doing in Afghanistan and the surrounding area. I didn't gather any specific solution being proposed by the author - which I appreciated - but I came away with a feeling that I'm not sure we as a nation know what the objective is there. How will we know when we have arrived? Barker illustrates the complexity of tribal and national interactions, a dynamic that I know I didn't have an appreciation for.

I loved the weird balance between, serious, funny and sad stuff. Barker knows when a joke helps to put things in perspective and when to get serious about serious stuff. Some reads make you think about your life, goals and expectations, some others make you laugh and some other make you feel sad. Barker delivers the whole package but instead of an awful emotional rollercoaster mess, I experienced a complex… well yeah, emotional rollercoaster mess, not in the awful way but in the way that life is supposed to be when you face reality and try to find balance between work, responsibilities, romance, war and everything else. I guess.I was really surprised to discover so many negative reviews of The Taliban Shuffle. A shallow reading of those reviews revealed to me that readers were disappointed about the author talking too much about herself, and that this book is not a journalistic work. I have to agree: this is not a journalistic work, is a lot more: Barker offers not only an account of the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan but also offers the human side of journalism and a personal consideration of what she is living.Especially when reading non-fiction, honesty is a very valuable item for me as a reader and Barker writing seemed to me quite honest. She shares her feelings, thoughts and expectations, she is open about everything and this is great. She is not trying to impress anyone nor trying to be funny nor trying to convey any particular agenda. She just states what she thinks and I liked that.What other reviews complain about, is what I enjoyed the most: Barker talks a lot about herself. This is not merely an account of war in South Asia, is an account of war in South Asia through the eyes of a woman who struggles with her highly demanding job, her personal life and the inconvenience of living in a foreign country. In two foreign countries, actually.Not the kind of book I’m used to read but I really enjoyed it. I don't want to sound corny but reading this book made consider many things. On one hand I realised how litle I know about armed conflicts in the world, real problems of real people suffering. On the other hand, I reflected on how terribly I'm handling my life-work balance and the need I have for prioritizing and bring some order to my life.

Very good book to read. Oh sure, this is about her time as a journalist in war torn countries, but her presentation of the historic context of problems in Afghanistan and Pakistan was great. I learned much about the conflicts there and the interplay of US involvement and changing politics helped me reframe my understanding of the current conflicts occurring in our government. She has no axe to grind, just reporting what occurred.

An excellent read, if you wonder how journalists star in local news and end up covering stories in active war zones at the other end of the globe. And especially if you've already enjoyed the movie Whiskey Tango Foxtrot starring Tina Fey as Kim Barker, the author of this book. There are almost always many more interesting insights in the book than in the movie script taken from the book, since the script has to distill a lifetime down into 90 minutes. That is so in this case.

I've just begun reading this book. It's quite readable (for a serious programming language book), by a couple of people with a depth of history with Rust and with a long history in other serious systems programming projects.Earlier today I went looking for my first "Rust book", as Rust is at the top of my list as the next computer language that I want to learn. I started back in the 1970's with FORTRAN on CDC servers, and then with C inside Bell Labs on PDP 8's and 11's. Kernighan and Ritchie's original 1978 "C Programming Language" is the oldest "classic" language book on my shelf, which, like this Rust book, I purchased shortly after it was published.Hopefully I will remember to return to this review, once I have gotten further into it. But so far, it's looking like a potential "classic."Update #1: I've gotten a quarter of the way into the book. It's most excellent so far, combining a rare mix of a readable, conversational style with a coherent organization and meticulous accuracy both in the detail and in the conceptual, by a couple of authors who know their stuff, both Rust and systems programming. Unless the authors are the 1 in a 1000 who write polished prose in the first draft, there's the mark of some dang good editing here too.Update #2: This book (at least the Kindle version I'm reading) lacks a Table of Contents, which I miss. The book is quite well organized, by chapter and subchapter, so I'm not sure why there is no Table of Contents. Perhaps the hardcopy edition will have such, but the "location" rather than "page number" positioning of a Kindle book makes a Table of Contents more difficult?Update #3: Oops - sorry - there is a table of contents in the Kindle version. It doesn't appear as part of the inline text such as after the title and copyright pages, before the Introduction. Rather it's a special Kindle accessible table of contents (look for the 3 horizontal bar menu pull down icon, near the upper left), which you can access from any "page" in the book.Update #4: Unlike Kernighan and Ritchie's original 1978 "C Programming Language" book, and unlike David Beazley's essential Python Essential Reference, Blandy's Programming Rust book is not the primary and essential language reference. In particular, the Index of Blandy's book is only about 15 pages, and I often find that a particular keyword for which I am looking is not in Blandy's Index. Beazley's far more thorough index is about 77 pages, for a similar sized book, of around 600 pages each. This reflects our changing times ... the world is online now, or at least Rust is. For example, over the last day, I was frustrated by my limited newbie understanding of the various string types in Rust (a rich and carefully thought out area of Rust), until I realized that searching in the online Rust documentation, doc.rust-lang.org for the language, library and tools, and in particular, for my particular questions of the moment, doc.rust-lang.org/std for Rust's standard library, was a much more rewarding way to learn what I needed to know next. (Yes, a 200 page book in 1978 could be a far more complete reference than a 600 page book today; the Rust of today is a far larger language than C was back in 1978.)

O'Reilly has a reputation for putting out substantially higher-quality books than most other publishers in this genre, and this book is a shining example. The text is comprehensive without being exhaustive. The examples are well-designed, and the concepts they embody carefully explained. There's just enough humor to make an engaging read cover-to-cover, while maintaining a high level of rigor and professionalism.It's important to note that this is *not* a book for the novice programmer. It's a book for someone who knows one or more *other* languages well, and wants to start using Rust to build applications. Since Rust is designed for systems programmers, many of the comparisons are to other systems languages such as C, C++, and Java.Compared to languages like Go or Python, Rust can be a bit adversarial for the beginner -- what experienced rusaceans refer to as "fighting with the type checker". Most of the reference material available online either assumes familiarity with Rust's checks, or explains it using formal rules. Neither approach is particularly helpful when you're fighting. Jim and Jason explain type and borrow checking from a practical perspective, highlighting a few common design patterns and how they are implemented in Rust (or why they are difficult to implement in rust).I've been hacking away in Rust for a year or so now, writing toys and fiddling with Rust features, but only having finished this book do I feel like I could successfully design and build a large application in Rust.

This is not for beginners; you need significant experience in programming in order to understand the book, and preferably some C/C++ experience. But for an experienced, professional programmer interested in Rust, this is probably the best place to start.

Okay, so when this book was recommended to me, I'll admit I was apprehensive. Huge mistake. I'm a huge reader, and it's hard for me to take longer than 1 week to read a book. So, you can imagine how hard it is to pick a FAVORITE. Not in this case. The notebook is one of my favourite books of all time. You feel transported into this magical world as Noah reads his journal to his dear wife to try to get her to remember him (I won't give any spoilers). As a writer myself, Nicolas Sparks has given me skills and tools I never knew before. All in all, you really should read this book if you are looking for a good romance that keeps you on edge.I would recommend this book for ages 13 and up, for there are some scenes which may not be sutible for younger children. Also, this book was made into an amazing movie.On a side note, if you enjoy this book, continue the story by reading The Wedding, the fabulous sequel to The Notebook.

I watched "Great American Reads" this week and one section was dedicated to this book, which everyone who read it absolutely loved. I knew it was about a woman with Alzheimer's and obviously that intrigued me. I was also looking for another quick read, still recovering from the Kavanaugh debacle. So I ordered it and finished it in one sitting.I don't know what to say about this book. It's a lovely love story--the kind of forever after love that everyone hopes to have, fraught with first love, heartbreak, and reuniting, but tinged with the tragedy of Alzheimer's. My problem is that the Alzheimer's just didn't ring true. I know everyone is different but Allie, who suffers from Alzheimer's after nearly 50 years of marriage, seems not to be able to recognize the love of her life, but accepts him as a new friend and their story is fresh whenever he tells it...but though she does not know his name or who he is, she has lost none of the ability to speak eloquently and that is SO contrary to what I am experiencing with my mother that I just couldn't believe that part of it. The letter she writes to Noah as they are about to enter a senior facility, knowing that her symptoms will inevitably become worse, was so perfect that it could not possibly have been written by someone whose Alzheimer's had progressed to the point of needing to move to a facility.

I wanted to read a romance. And The Notebook, a romantic novella so famous it is an Internet meme for romance and gender politics, was 1.99 on Kindle.There’s a lot to like about The Notebook. It portrays a universe that we don’t actually live in, a faith, a worldview, a set of beliefs—and you can let yourself believe it for a while. It declares that nostalgia, cliche, and life lived as a summary, with a soft lens filter, is the best kind of life.I don’t agree. I think life is actually much, much better than how it is depicted in The Notebook. Life is far more vibrant, with hot sauce and meaningless moments and the prickle of seal whiskers. The Notebook universe only has room for summary, cliche, and edges so rounded they aren’t edges anymore. There are no scenes in the Notebook, just a series of memories.Still, I read the whole thing, and cried at least once. So there you go. If you want to sing and pray in that church, you can. You don’t have to be a believer. It’s available.

I liked the book as much as the movie it gave more vivid details of their story how they found out about Allie’s illness and touched a bit on the children they had. It almost made you want more information like their was a true history behind the characters like they were real life people. I am about to read The Wedding and hope that I find it just as intriguing. Nicholas Sparks is a fantastic writer and I was sad to hear that there will not be anymore screen adaptations of his novels .

In so many ways this is my parents life. My Mom had Alzheimer's Disease and had to be put in a Nursing Home, but my Dad lives with my sister and he went to the Nursing Home every night for the past 11 years. He would spend time with her, feed her ice cream, help to bathe her and get her ready for bed. He would cover her in a quilt and whisper sweet somethings to her, told her he loved her, said goodnight and God Bless you. On November 8th, 2013, she passed away. The day of her Service before they closed the casket, my Dad tucked her in one last time. They both were 90 years old and both never dated anyone but each other. What an inspiration, honourable, devoted and loving parents we have. NICHOLAS SPARKS this book is phenomenal!!! Breathtaking story!

The first half is readable, lovely setting, predictable but satisfying. I had to skim the last half. It was too sappy and about as exciting as a made-for-TV movie. I guess that the reason it was written, for that and to sell lots and lots of books. I guess one is supposed to see it as an ode to a love story and, as that, it works. Just don’t expect originality.

I've been working in the classroom for nearly 20 years and I learned from this book. I've read it over and over. If you're teaching 3rd or above and want to wider and deepen your understanding of interactive/social learning read the preview on kindle and see if this book speaks to you. It has for me.

One of two books with a "Common Core" label that I have liked, this book balances theory and strategies to engage students in developing their academic language. This book is useful beyond the CCS and is congruent with sheltered instruction. This is a great resource for working with ELLs.

I highly recommend this book for all future and current teachers. I had to buy this for a class and I'm so glad it was on the required text list. Zwiers writes with humor that keeps your attention-- or reels you back in when your focus is fading. He presents teaching literacy in a way that is easily applied to teaching. Future students will benefit from teachers who have read this book.

As an EAL (ESL) teacher, this book is essential. It has become my bible for the classroom. It's loaded with practical information for teaching acadmic language, as well as strategies and activities. It's also a great resource for content-area teachers looking to provide more support for language learners. Very little theory, all application-- highy recommended.
