You'd be surprised how many pitfalls there are, and how many published papers succumb to them. Here's a sample:Statistical power. Many researchers use sample sizes that are too small to detect any noteworthy effects and, failing to detect them, declare they must not exist. Even medical trials often don't have the sample size needed to detect a 50% difference in symptoms. And right turns at red lights are legal only because safety trials had inadequate sample sizes.Truth inflation. If your sample size is too small, the only way you'll get a statistically significant result is if you get lucky and overestimate the effect you're looking for. Ever wonder why exciting new wonder drugs never work as well as first promised? Truth inflation.The base rate fallacy. If you're screening for a rare event, there are many more opportunities for false positives than false negatives, and so most of your positive results will be false positives. That's important for cancer screening and medical tests, but it's also why surveys on the use of guns for self-defense produce exaggerated results.Stopping rules. Why not start with a smaller sample size and increase it as necessary? This is quite common but, unless you're careful, it vastly increases the chances of exaggeration and false positives. Let me front-load the criticism. I wish an experienced statistics instructor had reviewed the manuscript. The book does better in its second half, where it discusses what I would call problems with empirical-research culture, than in its first half, which has more textbook statistics. The author neglects to explain the basics - things like "sample", "statistic", "sampling distribution", "conditional probability" - and often confuses matters by bringing in issue Y when setting out to discuss issue X. (Appropriately, a section named "Confounding Confounders" is itself confounded: we start talking about "coarsening" data (not what I expected based on the title, by the way; a Y-for-X switch already took place), then get into something else. I will single out the introduction to the "base-rate fallacy" as another weak spot). A choice to be non-technical means that solutions to some problems cannot be effectively presented - although sometimes they are suggested after all. The "woefully complete" part of the title is, I take it, tongue-in-cheek, so no quibbles there.A few "similar" books come to mind, including (a) the drier "Common errors in statistics" by Phillip Good, (b) the three terrific popular books by Ben Goldacre - "Bad science", "Bad pharma" and "I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that" - and (c) the elegant "Understanding the new statistics" by Geoff Cumming. (I have not seen "How to lie with statistics" by Huff and Geis). Reinhart's book is more "big-picture" than Good's, and broader than Goldacre's or Cumming's. (The latter is a perfect "single-issue" book; the former are not specifically about cataloging statistics errors).Statistical semi-literacy of empirical researchers is a serious problem, and any effort to improve the situation is to be lauded. Alex Reinhart's book - engagingly written, and nicely produced (and fairly cheaply sold) by No Starch Press - is a force for good, and one which can have a material impact.

This book is great!Just make sure you are not new to statistics. If you start with this book, you will learn nothing useful, only some tidbits here and there, mostly unconnected.This book will tell you only about p values and power of a test. Some 90% of the contents of this book are related to what people does wrong with regards to p values, which is a lot, I have to say.I had no idea of the current status of many science topics and this book sadly illustrates about it. You will learn that many doctors, scientists and even reviewers have no idea about what they are talking about or commenting on.You need to be confident with the use and understanding of many statistics before you get to read and understand this book. This is not a book for everyone, this is for sure. Neither is it a book about statistics. It is a book on the misuse and bad implementation of p values and how people dealing with statistics make the wrong question and get the wrong answer out of their statistics and their data sets.If you are fluent with p values and the power of the test, and you can deal with hypothesis testing and all that stuff, then go read this book and you will learn something really useful.If you are not used to statistics, this book will teach you nothing. But it is a very well written book, a nice piece of any collection. So go get it even if you cannot deal with statistics. Then, learn statistics because it is a huge investment anyway. When you are done, read this book and learn something else.

A fantastically interesting book. Anyone who loves numbers, and loves science will appreciate the compiled research and examples Alex Reinhart published here. Many times, reading the stories and statistical studies, I thought back to my Ivy League university experience. Often times, a professor quoted some study based on a particular topic, described the nature of the study, and then presented the conclusion. Too many times, the conclusion struck me as nonsensical or counterintuitive. I asked several professors, "Why did they conclude "A" and not "B" or "C" or even something else? None knew answers to these questions. Then, I asked them, "Where is the data? Have you ever seen the data?" No, they had not. One tenured professor shrugged and told me, "You can try writing to the experimenter and asking to see it." That blew me away. Professors at top universities believed and professed unproven conclusions they had personally never challenged.Statistics, however, was a favorite class of mine.

This book only has one equation as far as I remember. It doesn't explain how to do statistics, and doesn't explain the math of how statistical tests work, or the proofs that they work. Instead it explains what the results mean, and the many many ways statistical results can mislead. It covers clearly and humorously topics missing from almost all statistics texts (but not mine!): pseudoreplication, multiple comparisons, false discovery rate, publication bias, Simpson's paradox, the challenge of nonreproducibility of published findings, .... Anyone evaluating published research, or anyone analyzing data, must understand these topics to understand (or do) science properly. This book is highly recommended.

This is an exceptional gazette to the current poor state of statistically-based research. Reinhart is efficient in his enumeration of the major sins committed by researchers, usually unfamiliar with the nuances of the statistical concepts that are made easily available to them in stats packages. Furthermore, he provides many useful tips for how to countering much of the backsliding taking place in research.Complex topics were made easy to understand, and best of all, not a word in the text was wasted. I read this in two afternoons and am better for it.

Tom Bie, writing in the latest issue of The Drake, speaks to Anderson's talents and rapid rise. Some of the photos in the book, like the series of which the cover is one part, are remarkable as much for their quality as for how they were taken: in the cover shot, the force of the wave has sent rocks and debris in the direction of both Anderson and the fishermen. It is colorfully told, and its main characters are colorful to begin with. The FBI was just awakening to the threat of the Russian gangsters. The later book opens out into the world of offshoring and monmey laundering. It has neat, compact descriptions of banks, players and moves. I would like to see an update, as September 2001 and the pivot of the FBI toward terrorism may have reopened some opportunities for these folks. And I will be interested to see how our Justice Department and FBI are directed in this regard, in the Trump era.And who shows up here? If you guessed Donald Trump, you win. Might fake news travel back in time? What was Trump doing in this story? He was having a very nasty guy (a guy who sent a very threatening and vulgar note to the author, reproduced in this book) living at Trump Tower, and Mr. Trump was also making money from (the author claims) some very nasty casino patrons. Now, unlike a bank, a residential complex and a casino lack certain "know your customer" laws to frustrate money laundering. (Some big well-connected banks have shown themselves selective in complying with those laws, anyway.) Of course, money laundering, we all know, never happens in foreigners' New York area real estate purchases, or casinos. All this means Trump's behavior (to the extent it is recited here, around page 132) may very well, on its face, be legal. But ethical? That, I suppose, is in the eye of the beholder. Let's say I would never take any of this money I see as blood-drenched (aside from passively receiving the benefits of capital flight into this system from sources we would rather not look at). But I'm just a common fool and a nobody, not a big player like the Trumpster. Surely Mr. Trump has displayed some interesting selectivity about which immigrants he seems to think are problematic or not.Again, the trump name pops up at page 250, footnote, wherein "a top Russian crime figure in America, who once fought in North Vietnam for the Soviets," jumped bail on criminal charges and fled to Poland. "Before he fled ..., he turned over his mortgages for five pricey Trump Tower apartments to a Genovese [American mafia family] associate. The mortgages were liquidated and the funds were moved through a mafia-controlled bank in Manhattan's Chelsea." Well, certain people congregate around certain people. People are known by the company they keep, in business and not merely as personally. While certainly plenty of law-abiding people have or trade Trump Tower apartments, these do seem a status thing and almost a form of currency, a store of value, among a certain very sleazy global set. And this is our second White House?

Holy smokes, this book is hair raising. I feel very naive for having not known this was going on in the world, and in our country. And now I feel quite alarmed. With the current political climate, this book is quite timely, and every American would be better informed, if they read Red Mafiya. Note: after reading, you may want to sleep with the lights on.

Fabulous read: ranks with literature like, "Don't Shoot the Messenger." However, you really need to have a high IQ to be able to stay engaged with the data and information presented: everything comes together at the end of each chapter, but really comes together on the very last page of the book!!!

Very prophetic work by Friedman. Trump is the culmination of the efforts of Putin. Oligarchs, and Russian Mafia-not sure there is a distinction. It would have been great to see what Friedman thought of today, since he saw it years ago and I'm sure feared it.

I wish there were an update to this book-- but sadly, Robert I Friedman has died. A very good start to appreciating the impact of Russian organized crime in the US.

The first thing I did after opening this book was to go online and see if Robert I. Friedman was still alive because I found it hard to believe he could write a book like this and not get whacked. I was relieved to discover that, while he is deceased, death came from a blood disease as opposed to the hands of Mr. Ivankov or any of the other criminals he exposes in these pages. Simultaneous to reading this work I have open a recently released book on the Mexican Mafia which greatly pales in comparison to the artfulness of this account. I had no problem with Mr. Friedman's organization. The chapters, for the most part, tell differing tales of different characters which together provide a stunning and horrifying description of the Russian mob in America. The personalities depicted are every bit as interesting as those in la costa nostra. Indeed, that Italian gangsters played bocce ball while the Russian ones played chess goes a long way in explaining why they have been as successful as they are. The best writing rolls forth like a movie and that's true in the case of Red Mafiya. This was a magnificent book.

This book shines a light on the history and nature of the Russian Mafiya. In the perspective of today, and the Trump presidency one can see that we are well and truly screwed.

Although it was written in the year 2000 it clearly shows the genesis of current daily news headlines. I have to say it gets a bit convoluted, but the Sheer scope of the corruption makes you look over your shoulder wondering if nothing is not under the influence of this organization.

The (Half) Truth is an amazing read. I love Tatum. She sure knows how to get herself into some pickles though. You know it's all going to come crashing down but you can't stop yourself for every little misunderstanding that comes out with Tatum. Jason is ready for more and you can just feel the chemistry he shares with Tatum roll off the pages as you read. As all is reviled you feel for both Jason and Tatum. Jason isn't known for second chances. He has a bit of a past reputation that his cousin likes to use against him. Returning home you can tell he is a new man and you hope Tatum is the one. I love Tatum and Jason together. There are a lot of cute and sexy moments in this one. This one is an amazing one click read I couldn't put down.

If you're like me and your best friend is quirky and socially awkward and you think it's cute and lovable, this book will be right up your alley. From cheese puffs to kitchen fires, there were times I wondered how much of Tatum's experience had been plucked from real life...because you just can't make this stuff up.Harper did an amazing job of weaving a tale of Half Truth through a love story that will have you rooting for the characters and laughing through your tears. Another well-done book by a fabulous author.

Such a good book! Loved Tatum and Jason, they had me laughing out loud through out their romance. Hopefully I get to see them again as supporting characters and make this as part of a series

Was a very enjoyable read. It was hard to put down and kept you engaged till it ended. I hated to have it end so soon.

Tatum is broken hearted. After dating her boyfriend for two years, he proposes and she couldn't be happier. However, on her birthday of all days, he back pedals with lame excuses. Unfortunately, he's also her boss and rather than give up all that she's worked for, she decides to tough it out. Who cares that he's hired his new girlfriend? Tater doesn't mind having a front row seat to their romance. Obviously. But she also doesn't want to seem like a loser. So what does she do? Tell a lie. And that lie just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger. And do you know what happens to liars? THEY GET CAUGHT!!So now you know the gist, right? But there is so much more to this tale. Tatum is as awkward as can be, which makes for some laughs. This girl says and does the wrong things at the very worst of times, but her heart is solid. And the hero... Jason... reformed manwhore y'all!So my thoughts🤥 easy and enjoyable read🤥 likeable characters🤥 slow build romance, although the fling part started quickly🤥 low on angst - the conflict was pretty tame🤥 no muss, no fuss🤥 I found it hard to buy into these characters actually loving each other because they shared virtually no screen time as a couple beyond their fling. I barely felt the chemistry, which was necessary because... fling!🤥 Is it bad that I was more interested in Jason's cousin, Kelsey, than the main characters themselves? I wonder if she'll get a book. She definitely drove this story, even if she was only supposed to be a sounding board and advice giver.Like I said, it was an easy read and I liked it. Between Tatum's antics and Jason turning out to be a really great guy, this story took on a life of its own. I recommend it to anyone looking for a book that will leave them with warm fuzzies

TheTatum and Jason's connection was lukewarm at best and their interactions was immature. She just gets dumbed by her fiance who she desperately wants back but as soon as she meets Jason it's all forgotten. Then she's kind of cold to him but has to pretend she likes him because she lied to her friends that he was her boyfriend. The writing had no depth and I felt it describes a high school relationship rather than an adult one.

This story is just unbelievable. First our girl gets dumped on her birthday by her fiancé . Rather than own it she make up a stupid lie that can’t possibly work or go unnoticed. She lies to her family and best friend, like the truth won’t come out.She waste time moaning over her ex and wanting him back because..wait for it “She’s in love with him He has moved on and hire a new pastry chief to work in restaurant she still work at that’s his new girlfriend. Tatum goes on to tell lie after lie. It’s ridiculous and at this point 1/3 into story I’m done. This is not a romance or entertainment, a woman with no morals a d low self esteem. Ladies if a man don’t want you move on if he says it’s not working believe him .I hate the message young women are being told with this foolishness

For a book about The Holy Spirit, there really wasn't much content devoted to that topic. Maybe I got the wrong idea of what the book was supposed to be about?Francis Chan's book, Forgotten God, is much more thorough.

Couldn't put it down. I have to say this is exactly why I attended the church in Bellevue, WA where Pastor Mark preached. I SO appreciate his blunt and honest presentation of his Holy Spirit lead teachings of the Word of God. Thank you Pastor Mark and thank you God! Christians tend to TRY to be good and do all the Bible says in their (our) own power. There is another way! Be filled by the Holy Spirit and let Him do the work. Have a relationship not only with the Father and the Son, but the Spirit. And it was refreshing and very new to me to hear teaching based on the life of Jesus as our example.

This book is a must read. Pastor Mark delivers such a timely message through this book. I've read it twice now and plan on reading it many times over. Would love for this to be a small group study for our Church.
