This book reads like a junior high research paper, and is just as full of errors. Like another reviewer, the first turn off for me was on the first page, where it states, "...the people of Egypt, from time immemorial, have been oriented to the North. There lies the Sudan (!). ... The immense river of life, the Nile, that flows from the North..." (!) clearly the author has no concept of Egypt. He obviously threw some "facts" together in a hurry to produce this "book."Other examples gleaned from a cursory examination of the book: "Lake Tana in the Ethiopian region of southern Sudan..." "Amenti ( should be Ammit or Ammut), the God with the face of a crocodile, the front of a leopard, and back of a rhinoceros (should be hippo) "Pyramid of Teti (containing) sculptures with detailed descriptions of daily life in the old kingdom..." (Teti's pyramid contains only Pyramid Texts. Neighboring tombs of noblemen, however, have reliefs showing everyday life.) "Skabaka Stone" (should be "Shabaka") "Kehrheb priest" ( should be "Kher heb") Can't blame spell check on these last two! This sentence is wonderful: "Progress on translating Egyptian hieroglyphs was painfully slow thanks to the difficulty of deciphering the texts." Ya think?I don't like to be disrespectful in my reviews, but I appreciate it when authors show readers respect by doing a little more research on their offerings, or better yet, not setting themselves up as experts on subjects they know nothing about. I'm glad I didn't pay for this.
This is, indeed, a concise guide to the ancient Egyptian beliefs and their mythology; the book can be read in about an hour. Though an overview, it outlines their mainstream orthodox belief system and tells the stories of how their gods were created, or “born.†There are a few errors, however, such as the author stating that the Nile River flows from the North, rather than correctly from the South. Conversely, there is a lot of good information on the priest hierarchy and how they fit into daily life, including the roles played by the pharaohs and nobility. The book left a lot of questions in my mind, ones that would delve more deeply and specifically into their gods and mythology and flesh out the details. However, this book is a good beginning point for anyone who is interested in the basics of their belief system.
This book is beyond basic. The author doesn't go into any detail of the various belief systems and theologies of ancient Egypt. He glosses over a few of the deities. He relates a couple of oversimplified myths and pretends the rest don't exist. This book is too rudimentary for even a second grade level.Don't waste your time on it.
From the small basic understanding I already possess, I beieve the information is accurate. The information is presented in clear terms rather than complicated scholarly terms, making the text interesting , understandable, and educational. Whie.obvipusly not written for children, I think tweens and older could read this and fully understand the entire thing.
The book moves way too fast and lacks detail, and it is full of elementary errors. For example, his name is Mark Antony, not Mark Anthony. Also, it only mentions the Exodus of the Jews in a single sentence.
Another interesting piece from hourly history. Egyptian Mythology has shaded additional light to some questions I had; though concise, it encloses almost everything I needed.
This small book is just enough for be an addition to my bible study. Very easy to understand. Great treat
Many names were either spelled wrong or had extra letters added in. Kardesh? Anum? Just a run through from someone who barely remembers their archaeology class
