Author Chris Masters has written a compelling and very in-depth account of what makes the modern 'Digger'. He has captured the essence of how Australia's military can take everyday people and evolve them into resolute and hardy soldiers who can also adapt readily to working in any part of the world and still get the job done. Since Australia has a volunteer Defence Force, it is also interesting how people from all walks of life are attracted to the Australian army and those who pass through the various stages of training; from recruit to trained soldier, together with those who are rejected during assessments and also during the various training phases, which can last a considerable time.In this book, the author traces the beginnings of how the modern 'Digger' is created, by attendance at either the Other Ranks (OR) Training Battalion at Kapooka, New South Wales, or the Royal Military College of Australia, or the Australian Defence Academy, both situated in Canberra, the Nation's capital for Officer candidates. Chris Masters has been able to access both sides of the instructors and the Recruits/Officer Cadets and gain an insight into how the gradual change from the 'freedoms' of civilian life meld into a self-discipline that enables the ordinary 'Digger' to tackle any aspect of operational service from building a school to interacting with locals, through to taking on very hardy, tough and resolute foes in inhospitable climate and terrain. Masters has been able to meet with and gain first-hand accounts of many actions that have seen ordinary 'Diggers' be awarded medals for some really hair-raising actions. He also notes how just about anyone in modern military operations can effect an outcome, for example; the story of the impending stand-off over the treatment of a suspected insurgent and bomber by Afghan security forces saw a heightening of tensions between Australian, American and Dutch ISAF members towards the Afghan security members, as the Afghan Army members wanted to shoot the suspect. The tension was diffused by a cook, who, at the time, was dressed in thongs, T-Shirt and footy shorts stepping into the middle and holding up his arms, appealing for everyone to settle down.Masters also looks at the lives of female soldiers across the OR and Officer Ranks and how they confront challenges in working in cultures where females are not readily accepted in such a public profile as a soldier moving among locals, as well as keeping up with male counterparts while hefting packs, heavy body armour and other equipment.. Additionally, the author looks at the lives of partners of serving soldiers, both males and females, and how they cope with such challenges as partners away on rotation overseas, or simply being at work at 0400 in the morning. In sometimes very moving accounts he has also included the situations of when 'Diggers' have lost their lives and the aftermath of such events. The book focuses mainly upon operations in Afghanistan, as Australia continues to work with its partner members of the ISAF; however it does trace the earlier experiences of soldiers who served in Somalia, East Timor and on operational deployments with other armies around the world. The author also looks at the experiences of those soldiers who have retired from the army and those who have returned home, bearing the physical and mental effects of combat operations and their transition back to civilian life. As a former soldier myself, I can relate very closely to those who have served and taken discharge and also those who bear the scars, both physically and mentally, during their 'after life'. Sometimes being moved very deeply reading these pages. In summary, a well researched and written book that captures the essence of the modern 'Digger' and their experiences and personal stories of life in the modern military. A good read and well documented account of how Australia transitions awkward young civilians into tough and resolute, but compassionate soldiers who can take on situations calmly and with rationale in some very challenging circumstances. Well done, Chris Masters.
Well researched and written book. A good account of the Australian Army's recent history, written by one of Australia's leading journalist, his opinions were honest and he painted a picture of what the modern Australian Soldier, the term grunt does not do them service, they are intelligent, resourceful and committed professionals.Wish that there was more information on the past 40 years of the Australian Military, contributions to the cold war, Desert Storm, Somalia, etc.Great read, would recommend it to any one interested in the Australian Military or the involvement of the contributions of the members of the coalition in Afghanistan other than the US
Good insight to how the Army operates, as we seem to be unable to obtain any information from them directly, of what they were doing for us in Afghanistan. Chris Masters also has a superb track record and reputation.Well written and shows respect for our 'Diggers'.One interesting comment by Masters, that Australians seem to make 'natural soldiers'.....tough but fair, compassionate and very professional. Makes me feel proud to be an Aussie.A quality read and a big thank you to the author and the guys wearing the slouch hat.
An interesting insight into what the Australian soldier faces in this uncommon war. They can hold their heads up high knowing they are serving their country well. An amazing journey into the challenges they face on a daily basis. Found it difficult to remember all the acronyms though, towards the end of the book they became easyier to remember.A good read to understand just what our young soldiers face in Afghanistan and how they deal with it.
I found this to be an excellent discussion of the modern Australian soldier. Chris Masters writes with a sympathetic warmth for his subject, but at the same time gives clarity to the demands made of Australian troops. I found the chapter on training procedures most interesting and his description of SAS soldiers in action in Afghanistan quite riveting. My respect for soldiers like Corporal Dan is great as they operate under great stress with the minimum of fuss as they go about their deadly business.Glenn Wheeldon
Chris Masters poses the question: what characterises the contemporary Australian soldier, and answers the question in a carefully constructed set of journalistic profiles, with a surprising conclusion. The author has great credibility for any reader familiar with his work, and the book is skilfully enough constructed to be easily read (I couldn't put it down and completed it in a few sessions of absorbed reading). Just one gripe (and this applies to a couple of Australian e-books I have read recently): there are a couple of points when text formatting loses control, and the text changes font size for a paragraph or two - irritating!
Wonderful book on Australian soliders in our longest two wars, Afghanistan and Iraq. Masters spent a lot of time in both countries, interviewing soliders on deployment and the result is an excellent book.
IT was quite enlightening as to the extent of the competence of our modern soldiers. I was a little surprised at the few numbers that were involved in most operations. If the capacity of the Afghan soldiers in this book is repeated when the coalition departs then I fear that the country may well revert back to the past.
